Feeding North Edinburgh: Food with Dignity
DNC are delighted to announce that Morrisons Foundation has supported our Community Larder project for the coming year.
We have been awarded a grant of £4692, which will enable us to buy a display fridge for the larder and some new shelving, alongside £2500 to purchase fresh food to enhance the variety of food we offer from the Community Larder. This will be equivalent to approximately £50 a week for fresher produce.
Annie Sutherland, our community larder volunteer, said the following,
“The new shelves will make a big difference to the larder, enabling us to display our items in a more pleasing and eye-catching way, so people can see what they are getting. Our display will be a lot neater and tidier. The fridge will be a big bonus. The fridge we currently have is quite small, and so we can’t store many items in it. The new fridge will be much larger, and so we can stock different items in it, including margarine, butter, yoghurt for the kids, soft cheese, fruit and vegetables, eggs, etc.”

National Lottery: Awards for All
We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded a grant from Awards for All for the next two years to support our work with volunteers.
Currently at DNC, we have about 25 volunteers in various roles, from gardeners, cooks, minibus escorts, activity support volunteers, etc. What this grant will enable us to recruit, induct, support and develop all our wonderful volunteers to a much higher standard than we have been able to do up to now.
We want to build a structured pathway for our volunteers. We want to develop an induction training course which will include subjects like professional boundaries, confidentiality, safeguarding, access to services, etc. We want to be able to support volunteers to achieve other things, if they want to, like finding a job, starting a college course, becoming self-employed, initiating new activities here at the centre, whatever our volunteers want to achieve, we can now dedicate time to support their ambitions.
We believe that Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre should be the heart and hearth of the community, and our volunteers are the lifeblood.
Thanks to them for all they do for us, and thanks to the National Lottery for their ongoing support for what we do.

Unsuccessful bids
As well as the successful bids, we have had our fair share of unsuccessful funding applications, including:
Volant Charitable Trust: We applied for core support.
Cruden Foundation: We applied for support with our transport costs.
Esmee Fairbairn Foundation: We applied to them to roll out the development of green spaces across Drylaw and Telford to grow more food in order to make our communities more resilient to climate change.
